River Water Quality Analysis of Hadano Basin and its Relationship with Nonpoint Sources of Pollution
ABSTRACTThe water quality of six rivers in Hadano basin was investigated and its relationship withnonpoint sources of pollution was analyzed. This study was undertaken to spatially examine thepresent status of the river water quality of Hadano basin. Ground water circulation influencedboth the water quality and quantity. In the downstream basins of Muro and Kuzuha Rivers, CODand TP were diluted by the ground water inflow. In Mizunashi River and the upstream of KuzuhaRiver, water infiltrated to the subsurface due to the higher permeability of the river bed.Chemical oxygen demand (COD), total phosphorus (TP) and total dissolved solids (TDS)showed good correlation with unsewered population and agriculture area. While total nitrogen(TN) had good correlation with atmospheric nitrogen (N) deposition loads. Multiple regressionanalysis between water quality pollution loads and influencing factors revealed that unseweredpopulation had higher impact on the river water quality; nonetheless, agriculture also had someeffects. For TN, atmospheric N deposition load was taking effect, implying that it plays asignificant role on the water quality and cannot be denied for proper water quality management.Development of sewerage system could be considered as the decisive factor to maintain the riverwater quality in the Hadano basin. . Atmospheric mercury dispersion modelling from two nearest hypothetical point sources
The Japan coastal areas are still environmentally friendly, though there are multiple air emission sourcesoriginating as a consequence of several developmental activities such as automobile industries, operationof thermal power plants, and mobile-source pollution. Mercury is known to be a potential air pollutant inthe region apart from SOX, NOX, CO and Ozone. Mercury contamination in water bodies and otherecosystems due to deposition of atmospheric mercury is considered a serious environmental concern.Identification of sources contributing to the high atmospheric mercury levels will be useful forformulating pollution control and mitigation strategies in the region. In Japan, mercury and itscompounds were categorized as hazardous air pollutants in 1996 and are on the list of "SubstancesRequiring Priority Action" published by the Central Environmental Council of Japan. The Air QualityManagement Division of the Environmental Bureau, Ministry of the Environment, Japan, selected thecurrent annual mean environmental air quality standard for mercury and its compounds of 0.04 μg/m3.Long-term exposure to mercury and its compounds can have a carcinogenic effect, inducing eg,Minamata disease. This study evaluates the impact of mercury emissions on air quality in the coastal areaof Japan. Average yearly emission of mercury from an elevated point source in this area with backgroundconcentration and one-year meteorological data were used to predict the ground level concentration ofmercury. To estimate the concentration of mercury and its compounds in air of the local area, twodifferent simulation models have been used. The first is the National Institute of Advanced Science andTechnology Atmospheric Dispersion Model for Exposure and Risk Assessment (AIST-ADMER) thatestimates regional atmospheric concentration and distribution. The second is the Hybrid Single ParticleLagrangian Integrated trajectory Model (HYSPLIT) that estimates the atmospheric concentrationdistribution in the vicinity of industrial facilities . The geological controls of geothermal groundwater sources in Lebanon
AbstractLebanon is a country that is relatively rich in water resources, as compared to its neighboring states in theMiddle East. Several water sources are issuing on the surface or subsurface, including nonconventionalwater sources as the geothermal groundwater. This aspect of water sources exists in Lebanon in severallocalities, as springs or in deep boreholes. To the present little attention has been given to these resourcesand their geological setting is still unidentified. The preliminary geological field surveys revealed thatthey mainly occur in the vicinity of the basalt outcrops. Therefore, understanding their geologicalcontrols will help in exploring their origin, and thus giving insights into their economical exploitation.This can be investigated by applying advanced detection techniques, field surveys along with detailedgeochemical analysis. This study aims at assessing the geographic distribution of the geothermal water inLebanon with respect to the different geological settings and controls that govern their hydrogeologicregimes. It will introduce an approach for an integrated water resources management which became ofutmost significance for the country. . Surveying thermal sources Considering the case of Lebanon; it is becoming obvious that most geothermal sources are found in the context of basalt rocks. Therefore,. explore the geothermal resources in Lebanon. Yet this study introduces an inventory on the geological controls that govern the existence of these resources.

An overview of the EU Member States support schemes for the promotion of renewable energy sources
AbstractIn this work, an overview of the European Union (EU) Member States support schemes for thepromotion of renewable energy sources (RES) is provided. In particular, the status of the electricitygeneration capacity as well as the RES mixture in the Member States is described. Moreover, thedifferent support schemes such as, investment support, feed-in tariffs (FiTs), tradable green certificates,and fiscal and financial measures which the Member States have adopted for the promotion of REStechnologies are discussed in detail. Some Member States are implementing a single support scheme forthe promotion of RES for power generation (RES-E), e.g., seven Member States use FiTs, or implementa hybrid support scheme by combining all or some of the four categories of the RES-E supportingschemes. Although, these support schemes have increased the penetration of the RES-E technologies inthe Member States, still there is a long way in order to achieve the 2020 target. The reason for this maybe that the way these schemes have been used so far, i.e., either as single support schemes or incombination of FiTs or tradable green certificates with investment support and fiscal and financialmeasures, has been ineffective. A more effective combination could be a hybrid scheme consisting ofFiTs with tradable green certificates measures, as in the case of Italy and United Kingdom, that willincrease the RES-E penetration and eliminate the possible technical problems which will arise from thisincreased penetration and have an effect in the stability of the power system .
